Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old individual from Springfield, Virginia, has been convicted of financially supporting ISIS. He was accused of collecting financial aid for ISIS members in Syria between October 2019 and October 2022. The U.S. Department of Justice stated that Chhipa had sent over $185,000 for ISIS operations by collecting money through social networks and converting it into digital currency. He has been convicted of one count of conspiracy and four counts of material support to a terrorist group, facing a maximum of 20 years in prison for each charge. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 5, 2025. Reports indicate that ISIS-affiliated groups use digital currencies for fundraising, but experts emphasize that these transactions constitute a small portion of the overall illegal activities involving digital currencies.
