Nigerian man accused of crypto love scam faces 40 years in prison for defrauding victims by creating fake romantic relationships and transferring funds to cryptocurrency accounts.

The US Department of Justice revealed that a 34-year-old Nigerian man, Charles Uchenna Nwaduwe, is accused of running a sophisticated love scam in Massachusetts. Nwaduwe allegedly scammed victims across the US between 2016 and 2019 by creating fake online identities, establishing romantic relationships, and transferring over $2.5 million to his cryptocurrency accounts. One victim, a woman from Massachusetts, unwittingly became an intermediary in transferring money from five other victims. Nwaduwe was arrested at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and faces charges of mail fraud and money laundering. If convicted, he could face up to 40 years in prison, hefty fines, and asset restitution. The use of digital assets allowed the suspect to conceal the source of funds and have access to them from outside the country.
