The US Treasury Department is accused of disclosing sensitive financial and personal information of millions of American citizens to Elon Musk and his managed organization called Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E). The union groups of this department have accused it of violating federal laws, claiming that Musk’s organization unlawfully accessed this data. The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, the country’s largest union, filed a complaint on February 3 in the Washington D.C. federal court, accusing the Treasury Department and its secretary, Scott Besant, of privacy violations. The complaint highlights unprecedented and extensive exposure of information, warning that citizens sharing their financial information with the government should not be forced to provide this data to Elon Musk and the D.O.G.E department. This complaint arises as the Donald Trump administration tasked Musk with implementing this plan to reduce federal costs. Interestingly, the abbreviation of this organization, D.O.G.E, apparently refers to Dogecoin; a cryptocurrency that Musk has supported multiple times. The complaint mentions a post by Senator Ron Wyden on the Bluesky platform published on February 1. Wyden stated that sources informed his office that Besant confirmed full D.O.G.E access to the Treasury Department’s payment system. A day before this disclosure, Wyden had asked Besant to clarify this issue. This payment system includes sensitive information of American citizens, including ‘name, social security number, date and place of birth, residential address, phone number, email address, and bank account information.’ In this regard, Democratic leaders like Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren have expressed concerns. Schumer announced that he would soon present a bill to prevent unlawful interference in the Treasury Department’s payment system. Warren also warned that this system is now under Elon Musk’s control and may be misused.
